Quasi-Love wave scattering reveals tectonic history of Australia and its margins reflected by mantle anisotropy

چکیده
Abstract The Australian continental crust preserves a rich geological history, but it is unclear to what extent this history expressed deeper within the mantle. Here an investigation of Quasi-Love waves performed detect scattering seismic surface at mantle depths (between 100–200 km) by lateral gradients in anisotropy. Across Australasia 275 new observations are presented. inferred source and anisotropic preferentially located either near passive margins, or boundaries major provinces Australia. Azimuthal seismic anisotropy in the Earth’s upper mantle and the thickness of tectonic plates
S U M M A R Y Azimuthal seismic anisotropy, the dependence of seismicwave speeds on propagation azimuth, is largely due to fabrics within the Earth’s crust and mantle, produced by deformation. It thus provides constraints on the distribution and evolution of deformation within the upper mantle. Here, we present a new global, azimuthally anisotropic model of the crust, upper mantle and transitio...
متن کاملLateral Heterogeneity and Azimuthal Anisotropy of the Upper Mantle: Love and Rayleigh Waves 100-250 s
The lateral heterogeneity and apparent anisotropy of the upper mantle are studied by measuring Rayleigh and Love wave phase velocities in the period range 100-250 s. Spherical harmonic descriptions of the lateral heterogeneity are obtained for order and degree up to 1 = m = 10. Slow regions are evident at the East Pacific Rise, northeast Africa, Tibet, Tasman Sea, southwestern North America, an...
متن کاملUpper mantle anisotropy beneath Australia and Tahiti from P wave polarization: Implications for real-time earthquake location
[1] We report measurements of long-period P wave polarization (Ppol) in Australia and Tahiti made by combining modeling of the polarization deviation and harmonic analysis. The analysis of the deviation of the horizontal polarization of the P wave as a function of event back azimuth may be used to obtain information about (1) sensor misorientation, (2) dipping discontinuities, (3) seismic aniso...
